The emotional finale of “Ahsoka” concluded with a poignant shot of Anakin Skywalker’s Force ghost on the planet Peridea, signifying more than just a fan service moment. It carries a significant message about what lies ahead.
In Episode 8, titled “The Jedi, the Witch, and the Warlord,” the heroes of the show race to prevent Grand Admiral Thrawn’s escape. While not everything goes according to plan, the finale brings a sense of closure for Ahsoka and Sabine, who find themselves on the new galaxy of Peridea, while Ezra Bridger returns home.
As Sabine gazes upon the night sky, she senses “shadows in the starlight,” prompting Ahsoka to shift her focus and give a knowing nod. When she turns around, we see the Force ghost of Anakin Skywalker, smiling and watching over them. Notably, he is now dressed in Jedi Master robes, reminiscent of his appearance in “Return of the Jedi.”
Hayden Christensen’s final appearance as Anakin in the first season of “Ahsoka” sparked discussions among fans. Some saw it as a callback to the victory celebration at the end of Episode VI, while others considered it vital connective tissue for the franchise, signifying Anakin’s enduring watchful presence over Ahsoka.
An article on the official Star Wars website, providing an analysis of the finale, explains why Anakin appeared to Ahsoka at the episode’s conclusion.
“The convor Morai and the Force spirit of Anakin Skywalker both appear to give Ahsoka Tano signs that she’s exactly where she is supposed to be,” the article states. “With this simple wisdom, reflected in images that show Baylan on his journey, Shin igniting her lightsaber as she enters the bandit’s camp on Peridea, and Thrawn and the Great Mothers arriving at Dathomir, it seems like everyone is in agreement.”
A Force spirit or Force ghost is a being that retains its consciousness after death, allowing them to maintain their identity and knowledge outside the Cosmic Force. They often appear as Jedi Force ghosts during pivotal moments, marking the transition between one chapter and the next.
In the finale, Ahsoka and Sabine find themselves marooned in another galaxy, essentially taking Ezra’s place, while Thrawn and his crew arrive at Dathomir. Although it may not be the ending viewers expected, Ahsoka assures Sabine that “Ezra is where he needs to be, and so are we,” and it seems Anakin reaffirms that.
IGN’s review of Ahsoka Episode 8 described it as an “excellent conclusion,” successfully wrapping up character arcs while setting up a compelling cliffhanger. The open-ended conclusion hints at a potential second season, and fans have their own hopes and expectations for what may come next.
