The Unusual Sound of a Ram TRX with a Hurricane Inline-Six

We all knew this day was coming. The 6.2-liter, 702-horsepower supercharged V8 engine in an incredibly large pickup truck couldn’t last forever, especially with stringent emissions regulations on the horizon. While the Ram 1500 has not yet received Stellantis’ Hurricane inline-six engine, a prototype of the Ram TRX was recently seen with an engine sound that strongly resembles the twin-turbo Hurricane six. Surprisingly, it doesn’t sound too shabby.

The vehicle also appears to have significant power, as evidenced by how the truck leaned backward during vigorous acceleration. Although it’s not officially confirmed as the Hurricane engine, there are few six-cylinder options in the Stellantis lineup capable of propelling the hefty TRX in this manner. The High Output Hurricane is rated at 510 hp and 500 lb-ft of torque, and it’s clear that this engine isn’t a Pentastar. It’s reasonable to assume that Ram won’t introduce a new TRX model with reduced power output, so there may very well be a highly potent Hurricane engine in development, possibly even more powerful than the existing V8. Alternatively, Ram might offer both powertrains simultaneously, although that seems less likely.

On a positive note, the engine in this prototype sounds better than any other Hurricane engine heard thus far, even surpassing the one inside the Challenger Drag Pak. Additionally, the transmission paired with the Hurricane engine delivers crisp upshifts. Overall, it produces a more refined sound compared to the V8, although it might not capture the same boisterous character that the TRX is known for. Nevertheless, this sighting strongly suggests that Ram is seriously considering the Hurricane engine to carry on the TRX legacy.
